Silver Volatility and Microsoft Earnings

April 28, 2011 By Steven Place

Look For the Evidence

A lot of newsflow has brought equity indexes past their 52 week highs, and there are fewer and fewer reasons to be bearish on a technical basis. The market is indeed climbing the "wall of worry" in the face of rising commodity prices and GDP numbers that were a little off.

There's plenty more to come as we are about halfway through earnings season. SLV volatility is really picking up, and MSFT volatility into earnings is... not. This is why it's so important to watch how the options trade around individual names, because they can tell different stories.

In today's IWO Into the Close, we talk about:

  • how SLV is trading and how to use options to time intermediate term tops
  • why the premium in MSFT options aren't as high as they appear
  • how the carry trade must be respected as equities run higher
  • the divergence in momentum, ags, oils, and refiners
  • requests from the stream
